Preston Gallery, 77 Brock Street, Uxbridge, ON
April 4-30, 2024
So pleased that my triptych “Following Her Way” was selected to be part of Preston Gallery’s Juried Art Show! Come see it in person at the Meet the Artist event on April 21st from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, 77 Brock Street in Uxbridge, Ontario. The exhibition will continue until the end of April.
In “Following Her Way,” my daughter walks along a path, holding a strand of red yarn as the ball unravels behind her. The line of yarn represents her unique journey through life, while the ball symbolizes where she came from. My daughter first learned what it means to be a woman in this society by watching me, just as I learned from my mother. As an adult, I realized I needed to define womanhood for myself, separate from my mother’s example. A big part of this for me has been confronting the sexist aspects of my faith tradition that my mother chose to ignore. Untangling and healing from this internalized wounding is hard, but I believe it’s my life’s most important task—to free myself and, in turn, my daughter, so we can move through life with more freedom and authenticity.
